Mainsail Scholarship Fund

The Mark Sorensen Youth Sailing Program was founded in 2006 to make the sport of sailing accessible to local children of all backgrounds. As a way to expose more kids to sailing, MSYSP launched the Mainsail Scholarship in the summer of 2017 so that donations could be specifically earmarked to sponsor at-risk children living in the communities we serve.

Thanks to the generosity of local businesses and organizations such as CenterState Bank, Rex Air, West Marine, Island Hammock Pet Hospital, the Community Foundation of the Florida Keys as well as other local individuals and families, more than 30 low-income kids and teens have attended our year-round sailing programs on either a full or partial scholarship.

Companies, individuals and foundations wishing to sponsor a young sailor can do so for as little as $275 (which pays for one week of summer camp), $450 (which pays for a two-week session of summer camp) or $525 (which covers a 3 month season of Learn to Sail during the academic year).  Donors can even recommend a specific child to be considered for the scholarship, but the child’s family will be required to fill out the scholarship application and meet the eligibility criteria set by our review committee.

Families seeking financial assistance to MSYSP programs, can complete the Mainsail Grant Application and submit it to  The original application along with the required documentation must be submitted via mail to the address listed below, however.  For questions or additional information about sponsoring a sailor or applying for a scholarship, please contact our Director at (305) 747-2600 or send an Email to
