Due to Covid-19 we will be limiting attendance this year to Optimist sailors only. Registration will open in late October. Details regarding registration fees, refunds and max capacity of sailors still to be determined so STAY TUNED! Just know that there will be a Buccaneer Blast Regatta in 2021!
2020 BUCCANEER BLAST REGATTA ENDS WITH A STRONG BREEZE AND FANTASTIC RACING!
After a very light wind start on the first day, Sunday brought cooler weather, a steady breeze, and sunny skies. Conditions could not have been more perfect for racing. Overall 149 sailors from 12 different yacht clubs competed in Optis, Lasers, and Open Skiffs. This year’s event boasted 83 sailors on the Opti Green Fleet along with 54 sailors on the RWB course.
Congratulations to Blue Fleeter Beck Brill of Coral Reef Yacht Club for finishing at the top of a very competitive RWB fleet. Key Biscayne Yacht Club’s Felix Mones grabbed first place for the Green Fleet. In the Laser class, Key Biscayne’s Tommy McCormick came in ahead of the 4.7 pack, while Luke Middaugh of Edison Sailing Center won the Radial fleet.
On behalf of the Mark Sorensen Youth Sailing Program and the Upper Keys Sailing Club, we’d like to extend our sincerest gratitude to all the families and teams that continue to support our event each year. We hope everyone had a great time and we look forward to seeing you at next year’s regatta!

EARLY CHECK-IN FRIDAY, FEB. 28th 6 – 8 pm: Get your sailors all checked in while you grab a cocktail at our bar. It’ll be one less thing to worry about Saturday morning!
TRAILER & BOAT DROP OFF: Teams are encouraged to unload their boats from 2 to 9 pm on Friday. All spectator and coach boats can use our onsite ramp to launch and tie off their boats for the weekend. NO BOATS MAY BE LEFT AT THE MAIN RAMP OVERNIGHT. Simply tie off to another boat at one of the other smaller docks. On Saturday, spectator boats may launch their boats ONLY AFTER all fleets have departed the beach. Please fill out this quick online form so that we have your information in advance of the regatta: Coach & Spectator Boat Registration
There will be designated trailer parking throughout the weekend at the empty lot located right behind the Walgreens on Overseas Hwy (MM 100) on the corner of Homestead Ave and Atlantic Blvd.
GUEST PARKING & FREE SHUTTLE SERVICE:
All regatta visitors are welcome to park their cars free of charge at the lot behind Walgreens while visiting the sailing club. A complimentary shuttle service will transport all guests to and from the lot to the sailing club throughout the weekend.
Please refrain from parking along the streets adjacent to the club. Local police will be patrolling the neighborhood Saturday and Sunday and will enforce fire lane rules. Other than to drop off gear and boats, there will be no available parking at the club grounds throughout the weekend.
SATURDAY AFTER THE RACES:
Stick around the sailing club on Saturday following the races for some live music courtesy of local musician Aaron Austin. We’ll be serving some awesome BBQ pork and chicken from Homestead’s famous Shiver’s BBQ Restaurant right around 5 pm. And don’t forget to snap up a few tickets for our always-fun raffle event. Dinner and raffle tickets can be purchased online as part of the registration or at the clubhouse. Tickets for the BBQ dinner will be $18 pp. Sailors will enjoy a pasta dinner as part of their registration package. Pasta dinner tickets for siblings under the age of 12 can be purchased for $5 while supplies last. All proceeds will benefit our 501 c(3) youth sailing program!
SAFETY FIRST: HANG ON TO THOSE WRISTBANDS!
We will be using the digital wristbands provided by The Club Spot to check sailors in and out each day. Sailors are encouraged to wear their wristbands all weekend long and return them at the clubhouse on Sunday after they have checked in.
THIS WILL BE A “CLEAN” REGATTA:
Sailors, parents, siblings, and coaches: please bring a reusable water bottle for each member of the family and team, and refrain from bringing single-use plastic items. We have a water fountain inside the clubhouse and will have various 5-gallon orange water jugs filled with ice water.
We will also have several blue recycling bins throughout the club grounds so please encourage everyone to recycle their plastic, glass, and aluminum items.
Please, DO NOT bring any outside alcohol onto the property, our limited liquor license prohibits this. Besides, we have a full bar with the cheapest priced drinks in Key Largo!
