PICTURE PERFECT RACING WEATHER CAPS OFF ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL BUCCANEER BLAST REGATTA
The skies cleared and a steady 11-14 knot breeze blew onto Buttonwood Sound just in time for the 2019 Buccaneer Blast Regatta held at the Upper Keys Sailing Club in Key Largo this past President’s Day weekend. More than 130 Opti, Laser and Open Bic sailors took advantage of the perfect conditions and completed 7 races over the weekend regatta.
LASER FLEETS MAKE THEIR MARK WHILE OPEN BICS MAKE THEIR DEBUT
Coconut Grove Sailing Club, Edison Sailing Center and the Treasure Coast Youth Sailing Foundation sent a record 16 laser sailors to compete in Key Largo. And for the first time in the event’s 10 year history, the regatta welcomed Open Bic sailors from Edison Sailing Center and the Manatee River Pram Foundation. We look forward to their return in 2020. Over all, the entire fleet of sailors proudly represented 12 different yacht clubs from around the state of Florida!
SOUTH FLORIDA SAILING CLUBS CONTINUED THEIR STRONG SHOWING
This year, a White Fleet sailor took the top honor as the overall RWB winner. Ten-year-old David Coates from Key Biscayne Yacht Club is probably the youngest-ever RWB winner that our event has ever had. Way to go, David! In Green Fleet, Reese Schwartz edged out his fellow Coral Reef Yacht Club team mate Daniil Riabykh to take the top spot. In Lasers, Coconut Grove Sailing Club sailors dominated with Dorje Hopkins winning in the Full Rig category, Roberto Rodriguez in Laser Radials and Will Wardlaw in 4.7s. In Open Bics, Brodie Hausman raced hard all weekend and brought home some hardware for the Manatee River Pram Foundation out of Bradenton. TENTATIVE DATES FOR 2020: FEBRUARY 8th & 9th!
We hope to return to our original date during the second weekend of February in 2020. Please check back in the summer of 2019 to confirm the date. We are happy to announce that we will continue to use Regatta Toolbox for the 2020 event as well.
On behalf of the Mark Sorensen Youth Sailing Program and the Upper Keys Sailing Club, we would like to thank all of the sailors, parents, coaches, volunteers and sponsors for making the 2019 Buccaneer Blast Regatta an unforgettable event!
