2021 Edition of Buccaneer Blast Regatta Draws Record Number of Youth Sailors to Key Largo
Whether its due to COVID, frigid temperatures nationwide or the allure of palm trees and warm weather in February, opti sailors from all over the country are sure about one thing: they want to race at the Buccaneer Blast Regatta February 27-28 at Rowell’s Waterfront Park. Just about every region of the United States will be represented with 250 sailors from as far as California, the midwest, the north and southeast and all over Florida participating in the weekend-long racing event in Key Largo. With nearly 8 acres of waterfront property facing Blackwater Sound, Monroe County’s Rowell’s Park provides an ideal and ample backdrop for what promises to be the most exciting Buccaneer Blast Regatta yet.

Friday, Feb. 26th: 8am to 10pm
Feb. 27-28: 7am to sunset
Face coverings by sailors, coaches and parents while on land will be non-negotiable as mandated per Monroe County ordinance. All teams, parents and coaches will be asked to remain in their designated “bubble” areas. Participants will have more than 3 acres of flat, unobstructed land to prepare for launching and de-rigging. Please social distance accordingly.
LIMITING PARK ATTENDANCE:
Because of the number of sailors participating and the need to social distance, we are restricting family members present during pre-launch and post-races to a single parent or guardian per sailor, where possible. Siblings and extended family may not be present at the park during pre launch and post-race periods. Parents of experienced RWB and Laser sailors are strongly encouraged to drop off their sailors, boats and gear at the park and then leave the premises.
MANDATORY MONROE COUNTY WAIVERS OF LIABILITY:
As a pre-requisite to host this year’s Buccaneer Blast at RWP, Monroe County made it mandatory for each adult and child attending our regatta to sign and date the county’s COVID-19 Waiver of Liability. Please read and sign digitally as soon as possible. SAILORS’ RACES WILL NOT BE SCORED UNLESS BOTH THE ADULT AND CHILD WAIVERS FORMS HAVE BEEN SIGNED ONLINE.

TEAM POINT OF CONTACT:
There will be absolutely NO INDIVIDUAL SAILOR CHECK IN this year. One or two parents from each team must step up and serve as the POC throughout the event. The POCs will be responsible for picking up the labeled sailor bags with regatta T-shirt and streamers (if RWB) and for picking up the lunches on Saturday and Sunday. The sailor bags for each team will be available for pick up on Friday afternoon and Saturday morning at the main registration tent.
SAIL NUMBER CHANGES:
Once all the sail numbers have been confirmed and your team’s sailor bags have been picked up, consider your sailors checked in. Sail number changes should be submitted via Email to email@example.com by Thursday, February 25th. In the event of sail number changes on Saturday morning, changes should be sent via text to 305.747.2600

Coach boat flags will be distributed by teams and must be displayed prominently on every vessel. Either a coach or a POC may come and pick up the coach boat flags for the team and return them to the tent area following the races on Sunday.
Coaches are strongly encouraged to arrive on Friday and launch their coach boats at the Caribbean Club just ¼ mile south from Rowell’s. There is a $10 launch fee. Be sure to have someone go out on the boat and another person to drive the car back with boat trailer to Rowells. DO NOT LEAVE ANY CARS OR BOAT TRAILERS AT THE CARIBBEAN CLUB.
Separate instructions regarding launching/retrieval and overnight rafting on Saturday and Sunday will be texted and/or emailed to team coaches directly.
Parents bringing their own boats may use the public ramp at the Caribbean Club two blocks south of RWP throughout the weekend. There is a $10 launching fee. No overnight rafting arrangements for spectator boats is being provided for this event.
LIMITED CAR PARKING AT ROWELLS/OVERFLOW PARKING:
We will be limiting the number of cars able to park onsite to a designated area closest to Overseas Hwy. Once this area is full, cars will be directed to park at nearby Key Largo School (KLS), which is just north of RWP at 104801 Overseas Hwy on the opposite side of the street from RWP. We are currently trying to secure complimentary shuttle service to take regatta attendees to and from KLS and RWP. Should shuttle service not be available, it is only a short 5-10 minute walk from the parking lot of KLS to RWP. We will also have an off-duty police officer directing traffic from Overseas Hwy into and out of RWP.
Per our arrangement with Monroe County, the Mark Sorensen Youth Sailing Program is responsible for trash pickup during this event. Because of the sheer size of this venue, we will be distributing one trash bag per sailor per day (to be included in their sailor bags) so that all the day’s trash can be deposited in it, tied up, and left inside or adjacent to one of the park trash cans at the end of each day. Coaches will also be given trash bags to dispose of all the end-of-day refuse from the coach boats. Additional trash bags will be readily available at one of the beachside tents
Sailors will be provided with a bagged Subway lunch on Saturday and with Pizza after the races on Sunday. The designated Point of Contact(s) for each team will be responsible to pick up sailor lunches on each day from one of the volunteer tents adjacent to the beach area.

FACILITIES AT ROWELL’S PARK:
We will have two 3-stall bathroom trailers for your convenience. You are welcome to camp out at the park for the day or help stimulate the local economy by visiting any of our great waterfront restaurants. There is no food for sale available at the park, and we will not be providing water and ice, so please plan accordingly.
Should this event be canceled by Monroe County due to COVID concerns, a full refund minus any Regatta Network admin fees will be provided. Should your child not be able to attend due to illness, please contact us BEFORE the event and we will refund you the registration fee. No refunds will be given after the regatta has taken place.
UPPER KEYS SAILING CLUB:
Unfortunately, the Upper Keys Sailing Club will be closed to visitors February 26-28th but looks forward to welcoming everyone back in 2022.
